Adventurous & Imaginative Play
At our school, we see high-quality play as absolutely essential for children’s personal, social and physical development. We recognise that high-quality imaginative and active play allows children to develop creativity, build resilience, take risks, solve problems and form strong relationships with others.
For this reason, the school has committed to the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) approach and has invested significant time and resources in this. Our playtimes are active, hands-on and engaging, where children interact positively together and develop cooperation, communication and independence.

What is OPAL?

The OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme enhances play to support children’s physical activity, social skills, creativity, resilience and enjoyment.
Developed over 17 years and used in hundreds of schools across the UK and beyond, OPAL is based on the belief that play is a vital part of learning. With around 20% of the school day spent in play, we are committed to making this time as rich and meaningful as possible.

Why are we so committed to high quality play and OPAL?
Childhood has changed, and we recognise that many children have fewer opportunities for outdoor play beyond the school day. Screen time for many children is rising and time spent playing outdoors is reducing. Across the UK, 56% of children’s only access to outdoor play is at school. This is why at Walberton & Binsted we have decided that play is something we must make as exciting and wondrous as it can possibly be.
Since beginning the OPAL programme, we have seen clear benefits, including increased enjoyment of school and wellbeing, fewer disputes between children, reduced accidents and improved behaviour.
